Our earliest questions, asked by the body and the pre-verbal brain are:

Is the world safe?
Will I survive?
Will you keep me safe?
Can I trust you to meet my basic needs?

These questions get answered in split-second assessments by the nervous system as we go through our earliest experiences and we develop attachment patterns accordingly. While these dynamics represent the best choice we have at the time, they don’t necessarily serve us for the rest of our lives and can hinder a life lived to the full.

This course is designed to give us an insight into the impact our earliest experiences can have on the way we bond, and how attachment wounds can be healed. The last course module is dedicated to the particular situation of adoption and to how the shock of abandonment can be repaired.

Annie Brook is a Body-Mind Centering teacher, therapist and author who has been working with individuals and families for over 40 years. Annie understands families, development and health, and has learned to help those in the most difficult situations, such as abused foster children, adopted children and their families and gang youth.

In this course, Annie will provide theoretical background, case studies and short practices covering:

  • earliest foundations of attachment
  • human relationship dynamics
  • adoption and attachment
  • how to unwrap shock patterns
  • how to heal attachment wounds
  • how to develop healthy self-attachment

How We Are Born Echoes Through Our Life

Thursday, 13 February 2025 at 19h UK time

Early impressions last a life time unless they are addressed. Infant overwhelm due to experiences such as C-section or other obstetrical interventions, prematurity, overly long labour,  postnatal depression of the mother, infant surgeries etc. create protective response habits and attachment issues.

In this module, we will look at the influence earliest impressions have on the brain and nervous system and how these experiences shape our behaviour throughout life. We will learn about types of birth experiences and common echoes later in life. Annie will show us how unwrapping shock patterns allows natural life force to flow through, enabling us to create healthy connections with oxytocin states of aliveness and safety.

Module two

Attachment Dynamics

Thursday, 20 February 2025 at 19h UK time

The nervous system is first and foremost a note taker. It assesses for comfort and safety, and makes meaning of events. ‘Notes’ are established as imprints, well before the brain can think, starting in utero with an awake amygdala and continuing during the formative 0 to 18 months of age and throughout developmental childhood phases. Beliefs from perinatal times encode as double binds, which is what drives difficult behaviour in a child or adult.

In this second module, we will learn about possible attachment dynamics and how they play out in human relationships. Annie will show how attachment wounds can be healed and what healthy self-attachment and a good connection to others feel like.

module three

Adoption Challenges

Thursday, 27 February 2025 at 19h UK time

The imprint from having been given up for adoption can follow an individual around like a shadow. Even if a child was adopted as early as at birth, they will hold the fear of being abandoned, as this imprint is stored in their brain. Especially if a child has experienced pre-adoption adversity, their ability to securely bond can be challenged to various degrees.

In this final course module, we will learn about the adoption imprint which may come with not just fear of being both loved and given away but also a set of  “bad baby” beliefs. Annie will explain how ‘spatial shock’ can be repaired and feelings of being unsafe in the surrounding space be overcome.
